Curriculum Overview

In an increasingly competitive global market, students need more advanced skills in order to be prepared not only for post-secondary education, but equally as important, for future job opportunities. Lake Country is committed to preparing all students to be well-rounded citizens with strong skills in literacy, math, science, the fine arts, technology, and overall character. Students’ academic progress is formally and informally evaluated and analyzed by teachers and specialists on a regular basis to ensure ALL students make or exceed their targeted growth.

Literacy: Reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills are fundamental to a strong literacy program. The Reading Workshop framework, which includes direct instruction/teacher modeling, small group instruction, and independent practice, is utilized in 4K through 6th grade. Writing process instruction guides students from idea generation to polished final copies. In grades 7 and 8, English Language Arts requires students to integrate reading and writing and apply these skills for a variety of purposes.

Math: The district's math program seeks to develop students who apply math skills and concepts to solve problems. Everyday Math curriculum, utilized in grades 5K through 6th grade, is supplemented with additional teaching and learning resources. In grades 7 and 8, students engage in pre-algebra and algebra coursework.

Science: As a school community, we strongly feel that enhancing our students' preparedness in science is necessary to give our students and edge in skills and interest.  Starting in kindergarten, students study concepts in physical, life, earth/space, and engineering/technology sciences.  LCS students explore the environmental education through the resources on our property.  Additionally, the LCS community has supported the implementation of Project Lead the Way to enhance the engineering experiences for 6-8th graders.  Course Offerings: Magic of Electrons, Green Architecture, Design & Modeling, Automation & Robotics

Social Studies:  Focuses on the five Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for Social Studies: Geography, History, Political Science and Citizenship, Economics, and Behavioral Sciences. The History Topic Timeline informs the time periods of study.

Fine Arts: LCS has long held the reputation of providing quality, enriching opportunities in the areas of music and art that allow students to create and express their ideas through auditory and visual modes.

Student Assessment

The Lake Country School District student assessment program seeks to create a balanced system that utilizes data to guide instruction and ensure student success.

The purpose of student assessment is:

•   to accurately measure student attainment of the Wisconsin Academic Standards.

•   to provide the data for making decisions about curriculum, instructional strategies, practices, and materials.

A variety of informal and formal assessments are used at the classroom and district levels to evaluate student performance.  Within the classroom, quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, observations and other student performances are used to measure student progress.  At the district level, student progress is evaluated in the areas of reading development, writing, mathematics, and science vocabulary.  Standardized achievement testing is done in accordance with state and federal mandates on an annual basis.

Student performance data is collected and analyzed by classroom teachers, the assessment committee, and/or curriculum-focused teacher committees for the purpose of improving student learning.  These analyses provide the basis for student programming  (i.e. at risk, Title 1, gifted and talented, exceptional education needs, etc.), lesson/unit planning, curriculum materials selection, and curriculum revisions.

Standardized tests results are disseminated yearly to administration, parents and the Board of Education.  Parents receive detailed written results of student performance on the Wisconsin Forward Exam, Measures of Academic Progress (grades 1-6), Star Early Literacy (grades 4K-2), and ACT Aspire (grades 7-8).   The administration and Board of Education receive composite reports on the entire student population.  For more information please visit: https://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/parent-info

The Lake Country School District shall not discriminate in methods, practices and materials used for testing, evaluating and counseling students on the basis of sex, race, national origin, religion, color, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation or physical, mental, emotional or learning disability.  Discrimination complaints shall be processed in accordance with established procedures.
